The Chung Hwa Han Guang Calligraphy Association

The Chung Hwa Han Guang Calligraphy Association (formerly known as the Han Guang Calligraphy Association) was established in 1988 by Calligrapher,  Dr. Huang I-Ming.

The Chung Hwa Han Guang Calligraphy Association is an organization which believes in an all-rounded development for its members. The Association values the(書法) “fa” (skills and methods), the (書藝)“yi” (styles and art) and especially the growth and development of (書道)“dao” (morals and ethics) in calligraphy.

In order to provide its members with more practical and learning experience, the Association frequently conducts academic lectures in Taiwan and initiates exchange programs and activities abroad. In Japan, the Association visited and inter-exchanged with their local calligraphy institutions; successfully held joint exhibitions at the “Culture Center of Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Los Angeles” in the United States; and led exhibitions at the “Shandong Provincial Museum,” the “Zhejiang Provincial Museum,” and the “Hunan Provincial Museum” in  China.

In 2007, the Association held a calligraphy exhibition entitled “Impact and Reappearance” at the National Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Hall in Taipei.

In 2008, “The Fifth Chinese Character Festival” (第五屆漢字文化節,) which was held at the HuaShan Culture Park in Taipei commissioned the Association to present an extensive calligraphy exhibition at the Cultural Park in TaIpei.

In early 2009, the Association organized a large-scale cross-strait exhibition entitled: “The Taipei-Hangzhou Exchange Exhibition of Famous Calligraphers’ Masterpieces” at the Yat-Sen Gallery and De-Ming Gallery, National Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Hall in Taipei.

In 2010, an exhibition named ‘”Something” has been written! Something “Eastern” or “Western”! – An exhibition showing the impact of Eastern aesthetics and Western abstractions on “Calligraphic” and “Non-calligraphic artwork”’ was put forward by our Association at the National Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Hall in December.

In March 2012, the “Inheritance and Development Calligraphy Exhibition” was exhibited at the Taichung City Seaport Art Center and later on in July, the same exhibition was displayed at the National Taitung Living Art Center.

In April 2012, at the invitation of the Xi-an Beilin Museum, China, our Association put forth an exhibition entitled “En Route to the Classics and Elegance.” And in order to enhance cross-strait cultural exchanges and understanding, we also participated in the “Cross-Strait Chinese Character Art Development Symposium.”

In 2014, an exhibition named “There is no ‘Right’ (O) or ‘Wrong’ (X) in the Eastern and Western Art”, was presented at the Tswei-Heng Gallery,  National Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Hall by our Calligraphy Association.

In 2016, the Chung Hwa Han Guang Calligraphy Association ventured to put up an exhibition entitled “Presenting the ‘East’ and the ‘West’” at the Kai-shek Gallery, National Chiang Kai-Shek Memorial Hall.

In 2018, a special 30th Anniversary Exhibition entitling ‘“En Route to the Classics’ – A Calligraphy Exhibition: Tradition and Innovation” was held at First Exhibition Hall, National Chiang Kai-Shek Memorial Hall. This exhibition was honored as one of the “Prize-winning Exhibitions” by the  “2021 Hengshan Calligraphy Award” Committee.
